About the role

We're seeking an experienced and motivated Deputy Municipal Building Surveyor to join our team.

In this key leadership role, you'll support the Municipal Building Surveyor (MBS) in delivering Council’s statutory obligations under the Building Act 1993 and related legislation. You’ll act as a senior technical advisor, providing expert direction to the team and ensuring high-quality, compliant building outcomes across our municipality.

The DMBS also deputises for the MBS as required, ensuring continuity of leadership and decision-making.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and support the MBS team’s daily operations, providing technical expertise and guidance.
  • Assess complex building permit applications and undertake inspections to ensure compliance with the Building Act and Regulations.
  • Manage enforcement actions, including issuing Notices and Orders, in line with Council policies.
  • Provide expert advice to Council staff, builders, and the community on statutory and technical matters.
  • Contribute to emergency management planning and participate in after-hours response duties.
  • Develop and review policies, procedures, and strategies that meet legislative and organisational goals.
  • Mentor and develop team members to build capability and a positive, high-performing team culture.
  • Represent Council at industry, stakeholder, and community meetings.

What we are looking for

  • Tertiary qualification in Building Surveying and solid experience as a practicing Building Surveyor.
  • Registration as a Building Surveyor Unlimited with the Victorian Building Authority, or currently registered as Limited and working towards Unlimited.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and supporting team members.
  • Sound understanding of the Building Act, Regulations, and related legislation.
  • Ability to manage budgets, analyse financial information, and plan resources effectively.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and sound decision-making.
  • Clear, confident communication with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
