About us

Kingston City Council’s collective focus is on delivering exceptional service that achieves our vision and meets community expectations.

We are an inclusive, resilient community with a thriving economy, where we all share a safe, sustainable environment. The City of Kingston is south-east of Melbourne and is approximately 20km from Melbourne's CBD. We employ over 1,600 people in a diverse range of roles including engineering, customer service, administration, finance, family, youth and children's services, sport and recreation, health, parks and gardens, planning, arts, and management.

The People & Culture team plays a vital role in nurturing our vibrant workforce and shaping an environment where every voice is valued. The Team Leader Health & Safety plays an important role in creating and maintaining an organisational culture that values the health and safety of all its employees. The position manages the implementation of the health and safety component of the People & Culture Strategy, the Child Safe Standards Strategy and the Workplace Health & Safety Plan in line with current legislation and organisational objectives.

The role

We are seeking an experienced Health & Safety professional to lead our dedicated team in promoting a safe, supportive workplace for all. Reporting to the Manager of People & Culture, you'll:

• Develop, implement and champion best-practice WHS strategies, policies and procedures
• Conduct risk assessments, investigations and provide expert advice
• Build effective relationships across the organisation to embed a proactive safety culture
• Lead and mentor the Health & Safety team, fostering professional growth

This is an outstanding opportunity to drive meaningful change within a progressive council genuinely committed to employee wellbeing.

About you

We are looking for someone with:

• Proven leadership experience in a similar Health & Safety role, ideally in local government
• Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation, codes of practice and guidelines
• Excellent stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills
• Tertiary qualifications in Work Health & Safety or related discipline

You'll also demonstrate our values of making a difference, showing care and respect, taking pride in your work, and being better together.

What we can offer

This is a full-time permanent position.

The City of Kingston is a committed child safe, equal opportunity employer and committed to reconciliation. We value the diversity of lived experience and are committed to creating a workplace where all employees feel safe, supported, and connected to perform at their best.

Embracing flexibility, we offer hybrid working arrangements along with 16 weeks paid parental leave, wellbeing initiatives, discounted memberships and more. You'll have ongoing professional development opportunities and be part of an inclusive, family-friendly workplace.

How to Apply

Kingston City Council is an equal opportunity employer, committed to being a child safe organisation and to reconciliation. We are dedicated to attracting, retaining, and developing our people regardless of gender identity, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, and age. Applications are encouraged from all sectors of the community, and we strongly encourage applications from the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community. We support adjustments throughout the recruitment and selection process, as well as during employment.

Don’t meet every single requirement for this role? Studies have shown women and those of underrepresented groups are less likely to apply for roles unless they meet every criterion. At Kingston Council, we recognise that different experiences make for great community outcomes. If you are excited about this role, but your experience doesn’t perfectly align to the criteria we encourage you to submit your application.
