About us

The Arts, Events and Libraries Department at the City of Kingston is focused on the delivery of industry leading contemporary programs, activities, and events. Through innovation and continuous improvement, the department strives to provide high quality learning, recreational, social, and cultural outcomes for our community. 

The City of Kingston Library Service operates eight public library branches, with major sites at Chelsea, Cheltenham, Parkdale and Westall, and minor sites at Clarinda, Dingley Village, Highett, and Patterson Lakes.

The role

We are seeking a permanent full-time Children and Youth Services Librarian to join the team. This includes a fortnightly evening shift on Wednesday, and additional required rotating weekend work.

This role is required to work with children, youth and young adults in a program delivery capacity. The role requires the successful candidate to be effective in communicating and connecting with a diverse audience of all ages. Your predominate working locations are Parkdale, Clarinda and Westall, with requirements to work across all sites. Reporting to the Children & Youth Services Coordinator, your role is to:

  • Plan, support and implement children and youth programs and events including story times, Dungeons and Dragons, Minecraft, STEAM, youth engagement and other emerging programs.
  • Provide ongoing management of junior collections across multiple sites, with accountability for the development, maintenance, and circulation of youth collections.
  • Proactively build relationships throughout the community by delivering and growing our outreach service to local schools, kindergartens, and maternal child health centres to create a love of reading in the community.
  • Provide support to the coordinator to develop, promote and implement new and innovative initiatives related to the library service.
  • Lead specific early learning and literacy initiatives throughout the year including competitions, school holiday program development, statewide reading programs etc.
  • Deliver innovative and customer focused service, including reference and circulation duties, acting as the senior librarian in charge with the ability to work autonomously, provide direction and instruction to supporting staff, and maintain responsibility for library buildings while on duty.

About you

We are looking for someone with:

  • Proven experience providing positive leadership in a team-based environment
  • A strong commitment to upholding Kingston’s values
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering programs to 0–18-year-old customers and their parents/carers
  • Knowledge of children and young adult literature, language, and literacy development, with experience managing library collections
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Enthusiasm and initiative to take ownership of the role and be an advocate for services and programs for children and youth
  • Experience with Minecraft, Dungeons & Dragons and similar is highly regarded 
  • Tertiary qualifications in Library and Information Management
