As part of the Planning & Place Division, the Municipal Building Surveyors Department works closely with our community and colleagues across Council, State Government and private industry.

 About this opportunity:

We’re seeking a thoughtful, collaborative and future focused Municipal Building Surveyor to lead our Municipal Building Surveyors Department and fulfil our key statutory responsibilities under the Building Act 1993.  

This is a senior leadership role that has significant exposure to working in a leadership capacity in our organisation as well as with our community.  You'll guide a skilled team, provide clear and balanced technical advice, and support safe and compliant building activity across the municipality.

What you’ll deliver                        

  • Supportive leadership of the Municipal Building Surveyors Department, including planning, service delivery and team development
  • A positive, inclusive and growth orientated team culture where learning, wellbeing and customer focus are central
  • Statutory responsibilities and decision making in line with delegated authority and relevant legislation‑making in line with delegated authority and relevant legislation
  • Oversight of core functions including building applications, inspections, complaints, Essential Safety Measures and swimming pool/spa safety
  • Coordination of interagency compliance investigations and contribution to regulatory reform initiatives
  • Proactive participation in the Municipal Emergency Management Planning Committee (MEMPC) and Coordination and participation in Councils ‘on call’ after hours service
  • A positive, growth‑oriented team culture where learning, wellbeing and customer focus are central

Your Skills and Experience

To be successful, you will bring:

  • A degree in Building Surveying (or equivalent) and registration as Building Surveyor Unlimited in Victoria.
  • Significant experience as a practicing Building Surveyor, with Local or State Government experience highly valued.
  • A supportive and contemporary leadership style that encourages collaboration, development and accountability.
  • Sound communication and relationship building skills, with the ability to engage respectfully and professionally across diverse stakeholder groups.
