About the team

The Local Laws team plays an important role in supporting a safe, compliant and amenity focused community. The team works across the municipality, balancing community education with enforcement to achieve fair and practical outcomes.

You’ll be part of a supportive and professional team that values sound judgement, respectful engagement and consistent application of legislation.

About the role

As a Local Laws Officer, you will provide clear guidance and authoritative advice to the community on relevant legislation, Local Laws, Council policies and services. You will proactively patrol the municipality, respond to complaints, investigate breaches, and progress matters to enforcement where required.

This role requires strong communication skills, good judgement, and the ability to manage challenging situations calmly and professionally.

Other Responsibilities include

In this varied and active role, you will

  • Provide professional advice and information to internal and external stakeholders
  • Conduct animal management and enforcement under the Domestic Animals Act 1994
  • Patrol municipal areas and respond to reported breaches
  • Investigate complaints and prepare reports, notices and briefs of evidence
  • Enforce Council Local Laws, including managing footpath obstructions
  • Administer and enforce littering provisions in accordance with the Environment Protection Act 2017
  • Administer and enforce the FRV Act 1958, including issuing Notices of Direction
  • Support School Crossing Supervisors as required
  • Undertake seasonal beach patrol duties (November–April), including weekend work

Your Skills and Experience

  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with a wide range of people
  • Manage conflict and deal effectively with challenging or occasionally hostile situations
  • Apply legislation fairly, consistently and with empathy
  • Work independently while contributing positively to a team environment

You will also have:

  • Certificate IV in Government Statutory Compliance / Animal Control & Regulation, Diploma of Justice, or a similar recognised qualification
  • Experience in law enforcement, animal control and investigation techniques
