About the role:

The Senior Building Surveyor provides senior technical and statutory expertise to support the delivery of building surveying services in accordance with the Building Act, Building Regulations, and related legislation.

The role supports the Deputy Municipal Building Surveyor by contributing to operational delivery, providing technical oversight, and ensuring consistent, compliant, and timely decision‑making. The position also includes responsibility for guiding and supporting staff to ensure building services are delivered efficiently and in line with legislative and service standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and deliver statutory building surveying services in accordance with legislative, regulatory, and Council requirements
  • Assess and issue building permits, conduct mandatory inspections, and issue occupancy permits and certificates of final inspection
  • Investigate and inspect unauthorised or non‑compliant building works and support the administration of building notices and orders under the Building Act
  • Provide specialist statutory and technical advice to Council staff, registered practitioners, applicants, and members of the public
  • Provide day‑to‑day guidance, mentoring, and oversight to team members to support consistent application of legislation and procedures
  • Contribute to service planning, process improvement, and the development of operational practices within Building Services
  • Participate in an after‑hours on‑call roster in accordance with operational requirements
  • Represent Council in statutory, regulatory, and professional settings as required

Essential skills, knowledge and experience

To perform this role effectively, you will need:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Building Surveying (or equivalent) and demonstrated experience working as a practicing Building Surveyor
  • Registration as a Building Practitioner in the category of Building Surveyor with the Victorian Building Authority
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of the Building Act, Building Regulations, Australian Standards, and related legislation
  • Experience providing technical oversight, mentoring, or supervision within a statutory or regulatory environment
  • The ability to assess complex matters, apply legislative requirements, and make sound, defensible regulatory decisions
  • The ability to manage multiple statutory tasks and priorities while maintaining accuracy, compliance, and appropriate records
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills suitable for statutory documentation, technical advice, and public enquiries
